KRONOS
How Many Children the God Eats Per Era

In each era, there is a primary substrate — the resource whose control defines power, whose extraction demands death, and whose accumulation constitutes the Black Iron Prison. The substrate changes. The god does not. Grain, wood, coal, oil. The conversion rate from human life to energy surplus has been calculable in every age. This model computes it across six millennia.

Kronos is not a metaphor. He is the invariant structure: the system that must consume its own generative capacity to remain in operation. The children are the labor, the soldiers, the conscripts, the miners, the civilians. The stomach is the state.

Total Children Eaten
// Universal feed equation — invariant across substrate type
kronos_rate(era) = deaths(era) / energy_extracted_GJ(era) × substrate_GJ_unit

// Substrate equivalences (normalized to GJ)
wheat_ton = 14.4 GJ/tonne · Roman grain province: ~3M tonnes/yr
wood_cord = 18 GJ/cord · Medieval feudal: deforestation-war nexus
coal_tonne = 27 GJ/tonne · Industrial: British coal 1800–1913
oil_barrel = 6.1 GJ/bbl · Modern: crude oil extraction + war reserves

// Children per GJ = inverse energy efficiency of the machine
children_per_GJ = total_attributable_deaths / total_GJ_extracted
higher number = Kronos is hungrier · lower number = machine is more efficient

The Invariant
The substrate changes every few centuries. The rate of consumption does not change proportionally — it accelerates. The Bronze Age machine ate one child per ~14,000 GJ. The modern machine eats one per ~3,000,000 GJ. This looks like progress. It is not progress. It is the same mouth, wider open. The energy density of the substrate increased 430× from grain to oil. The death toll increased, not decreased. Kronos did not become more efficient. He grew.
The Black Iron Prison
The BIP does not require slaves to know they are slaves. It requires only that the conversion of life to energy surplus continue uninterrupted. Bread and circuses in Rome. Coal and empire in London. Oil and democracy in Washington. In each era, the institution is redesigned. The formula is not redesigned. Kronos is patient because Kronos is time — the same devouring structure, wearing the face of the current century.
SOURCES AND METHODOLOGY
Bronze Age (4000–1200 BCE): Grain caloric density 14.4 GJ/tonne (wheat). Egyptian/Mesopotamian annual surplus: ~500K tonnes contested. Wars of the ancient near east: ~2M deaths/century (conservative). Trigger wars: Bronze Age Collapse (~1200 BCE), Akkadian conquests, Egyptian-Hittite conflicts.   Roman (500 BCE–476 CE): Grain province output 3M tonnes/yr × 900 yrs. Slave mortality embedded in surplus extraction. Wars: Punic Wars (1.5M), Gallic Wars (1M+ Caesar's own account), Dacian wars, border wars. Total ~15M.   Feudal/Medieval (476–1400 CE): Primary substrate wood (charcoal smelting) + grain under lord-peasant surplus extraction. Crusades: 1–3M. Mongol campaigns: 30–40M. Hundred Years War etc. ~10M direct. 14.4 GJ/tonne grain, 18 GJ/cord wood.   Colonial (1400–1750 CE): Slave trade = 12.5M transported, ~2M died in transit. Plantation = sugar/tobacco/cotton caloric equivalent. Energy substrate: biomass surplus. ~17 GJ/tonne sugarcane equivalent.   Industrial Coal (1750–1950): British coal peak 292M tonnes/yr (1913). 27 GJ/tonne bituminous. 100K+ US coal deaths per century (ILO/US BLS). WWI: 20M. WWII: 70–85M. Air pollution deaths attributed 10K–30K/yr (US alone).   Modern Oil (1950–2026): 1 bbl = 6.1 GJ. Post-9/11 wars: Brown Univ. CoW. Iraq/Kuwait/Libya/Syria/Yemen: see v1.0 model. Global production 102.6M bbl/day.   ENERGY NORMALIZATION: All eras normalized to GJ. 1 EJ = 10^9 GJ. Children/EJ = deaths per exajoule extracted during the era. GJ/death = inverse. Hunger Index = children/EJ normalized to Bronze Age = 1.0.
